ABOUT CATHY

Cathy Martin is a mixed-media artist who lives and works on ten acres of woodland and meadow in the rolling hills of beautiful NE Kansas. Surrounded by the rich color and tapestry of the Colorado mountains and Iowa farmlands in her youth,  landscapes are her specialty, and Cathy enjoys adding various wildlife into many of her paintings.

Every day Cathy tries to make her life a work of art and her art a work of life. She sees life from the perspective of a visual artist. Cathy specializes in commissioned art pieces. Making a memory into a work of art. Color and light influence each setting, and though photos are sometimes used to capture certain ideas, they are a tool only.

Cathy plays in a variety of mediums, including oil and watercolor, charcoal and even glass and mirror designs.  Non-toxic oil paint is her favorite because of its rich colors and texturing potential.  Where a softer, less detailed work of a smaller scale is wanted, watercolor is usually her choice.  Portraits have been done in watercolor, oil and charcoal, with charcoal most frequently used.

Cathy’s landscapes draw on her western and Midwestern background. Much of her work is done on commission and is based on a dearly loved photograph a client has cherished that Cathy makes into a lasting piece of art to display for generations to come.

Cathy’s portraits, when not commissioned, are mostly character studies.  They range from infants to the elderly and may include an animal or two.  Anything is possible, but reference material for custom pictures is needed to make sure your dog looks like your dog.

Cathy was educated by life and at the University of Kansas where she studied painting, life drawing, design and sculpture.

Cathy’s art  compels you to “walk into the picture” and to stay awhile. Get comfortable and and visit the gallery here.
